Summary:A switching apparatus is described, especially a contactor, which has at least one double-contact point (6, 7) to which at least one semiconductor valve (4) is connected in parallel. Because of the arc which occurs on opening of the double-contact point, the semiconductor valve (4) is driven such that the arc current is commutated on the semiconductor valve and is extinguished by the semiconductor valve as it passes through zero. The arc is used to trigger the semiconductor valve; in this case the control connection is connected via a braided cable to the contact link.
