New 4-chloro-1-methyl-2-butynyl carbanilates having the structural formula in which Ar is phenyl, 3-chlorophenyl, 2-fluorophenyl, 3-fluorophenyl or 2,5-difluorophenyl are selective pre-emergent herbicides which are useful in combating wild oats.
