1. Process for the preparation of sulphoalkyl quaternary salts of tertiary amines, characterised in that a tertiary amine is reacted with a sulphoalkylaryl ether of the following formula see diagramm : EP0064667,P8,F1 wherein R**1 denotes hydrogen or methyl ; R**2 , R**3 , R**4 , R**5 and R**6 are identical or different and denote hydrogen, alkyl with 1 or 2 C atoms, halogen, alkoxy, cyano or nitro (not more than two nitro groups being however present in the phenyl ring) ; or R**2 and R**3 or R**3 and R**4 denote, in each case together, the ring members necessary to complete a condensed 5- or 6- membered ring ; and n = 1, 2 or 3 ; at a temperature between 100 and 250 degrees C.
