A ceramic honeycomb filter having a large filter area and a low pressure drop is produced from a ceramic honeycomb body (1) having a plurality of channels (2) extending through the body from one end face to another end face thereof by providing one end face of the body with a perforated film (either by applying an unperforated film to the end face and subsequently pertorating it or by applying a perforated film to the end face) the perforations in which correspond to given channels opening at the end face, and charging a sealing material (4) into the channels through the perforations to seal the end portions of the channels. The procedure is repeated at the end face of the body to seal the channels the ends of which are not sealed at the said one end face. In a modification, the given channels may be sealed with a heat fugitive material, the film removed and the channels not sealed with the heat fugitive material charged with the final sealing material.
