The present invention relates to a method of testing a sample for the presence of meloidogyne nematodes, said method comprising analyzing the nucleic acid of said sample for the presence of a gene encoding a ribosomal RNA of a nematode or the transcription product thereof having a group-specific single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and/or a group-specific oligonucleotide polymorphism (OP), wherein said group is on a taxonomic level below that of the genus, but above that of the species, and optionally analyzing the nucleic acid of said sample for the presence of a gene encoding a ribosomal RNA of a nematode or the transcription product thereof having a species-specific single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and/or a species-specific oligonucleotide polymorphism (OP).
