[Also in Divisions C2 and C6] Artificial sweeteners for food products and drinks comprise novel compounds of the general formula wherein X is a radical selected from -CH(OH)CH 3 p-hydroxybenzyl, p-alkoxybenzyl, p-halobenzyl, -(CH 2 ) n 5(O) m alkyl or a straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing 1-7 C atoms; the alkoxy group having 1-7 C atoms "alkyl" is a straight or branched chain C 1-7 alkyl radical, Hal is F, Cl, Br or I; m = 0 or 2 and n is 1 or 2. In an example a sweetened orange soda is prepared containing citric acid, orange flavour base, sodium benzoate and bottling water with L-aspartyl-L-tyrosine methyl ester. Suitable food products for sweetening are fruits, vegetables, juices, meat products, milk products, egg products, salad dressings, ice creams end sherbets, gelatins, icings, syrups and cake mixes.
