Heading C2C. 2,6 - Xylenol and o-cresol are prepared by tertiary-alkylating o-cresol or phenol to introduce a tertiary-alkyl group having 4-6 carbon atoms in the para position to the hydroxy group, hydroxymethylating the product to introduce one or two hydroxymethyl groups ortho to the hydroxy group, reducing the hydroxymethyl group(s) to methyl group(s) and splitting off the tertiary-alkyl group. The tertiary-olefin produced in the de-alkylation step may be used, optionally after conversion into a halide or alcohol, as the tertiary-alkylation agent.
