Summary: | An addition compound of a tetracycline antibiotic, streptomycin or neomycin, or a salt thereof, is formed by reacting the antibiotic with a compound of general Formula I <FORM:1042836/C2/1> where R is C8- 18 alkyl and X is halogen. The preferred compound I is dodecylacetate pyridinium chloride. The tetracycline antibiotic may be tetracycline, chlortetracycline or oxytetracycline. The addition compounds are therapeutically active. Tetracyclines, streptomycin and neomycin may be isolated from aqueous solutions thereof by adding a compound of Formula I to the aqueous solution of the antibiotic, adjusting to pH 7 to 8 to precipitate the above addition compound and recovering the antibiotic from the addition compound, e.g. by treatment with a mineral acid. Dodecylacetate pyridinium chloride is prepared by reacting monochloracetic acid dodecyl ester with pyridine.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions for oral, rectal or parenteral use in the treatment of humans and animals comprises a carrier and at least one addition compound of a tetracycline antibiotic, streptomycin, neomycin or a salt thereof with a compound of general formula I <FORM:1042836/A5-A6/1> where R is C8-18 alkyl and X is a halogen atom. Preferred is the addition compound with dodecylacetate pyridinium chloride. Optional additions are vitamins. For veterinary use, the impure addition compound obtained from a fermentation mash may be used with a carrier e.g. calcium carbonate. |
