A process for making a pressure roll having a core member 2A3, an outer cylindrical member 2A1 and an intermediate layer 2A2 of flexible material therebetween comprises forming a plurality of parallel axially extending notches at one end of the outer cylindrical member 2A1 to form tongues 2A1t and then bending these tongues outwardly such that the outer cylindrical member has an enlarged end. The free ends of the tongues are then secured, for example by welding, to internally screw threaded members 81 screwed onto rotatable parallel screw shafts 51 driven by an endless chain 7 engaging sprocket wheels 51g on the screw shafts 51. This causes the screw threaded members 81 to pull the tongues 2A1t such that said enlarged end of the outer cylindrical member 2A1 is pulled onto the core member 2A3 and the intermediate layer 2A2. Thereafter the tongues 2A1t are cut off and the cut ends are subject to finishing.
