Summary:Prepn. of alcohols and diols by hydrogenation of a corresponding unsatd. cpd. selected from (di)esters and lactones comprises: (a) having an hydrogenation zone contg. a granular Cu-contg. ester hydrogenation catalyst; (b) supplying to the zone a vaporous feed stream (A); (c) maintaining a temp. of 150-350 [deg]C and a pressure of 150-2000 psia in the zone; (d) recovering a reaction prod. stream of alcohol or diol; (e) supplying to the zone a stream of H2-contg. gas, which is free from the unsatd. cpd., at a reactivation temp. and for sufficient time to reactivate the catalyst. (A) contains a H2-contg. gas and 1-4C alkyl esters of 9-22C alkylcarboxylic acids, di(1-4C) diesters of 4-16C dicarboxylic acids, gamma-butyrolactone or epsilon-caprolactone. Also claimed are the following: (1) a process for reactivating a partially deactivated Cu-contg. ester hydrogenation catalyst; and (2) a further process for reactivating a partially deactivated Cu-contg. ester hydrogenation catalyst.
