Summary:The apparatus includes a discriminating unit for discriminating whether an input colour image represents the specific original image using the input data in a predetermined format, and for generating a control signal for use in inhibiting faithful output of the input image in dependence upon the result of the discrimination. The input unit can receive input colour image data in any of several colour data formats. A format conversion unit is provided for converting the input colour image data into a common predetermined format which is suitable for discrimination by the discriminating unit and for supplying the image data in the common predetermined format to the discrimination unit . The discriminating unit performs its discrimination with reference to the colour distribution in the input colour image data, and includes a memory for storing colour distribution data characteristic of the specific original image. A processor causes a predetermined pattern to be added to the image represented by the input image data when the discrimination unit determines that the input image data represents the specific original image.
