Summary: | A container 12 for confining the air bag 10 has an inflater 16 for extending the air bag, and a lid 14 covering the container and adapted to be opened into the cabin of a vehicle by the air bag when the air bag is extended. A gas flow guide member in the form of a bag 20 having apertures 22, 24 is mounted in the air bag for guiding the gas from the inflater in directions upward and downward into the air bag 10 so that the air bag initially extends upwardly and downwardly with respect to the vehicle passenger, and then towards the passenger. Various arrangements are described to achieve this effect, involving shaped inner bags or a plurality of inner bags to deflect the air flow. In addition, (Figures 8, 9) use of apertured belts enables gas flow to be directed sideways with respect to the passenger in addition to upwardly and downwardly. |
