Textile-reinforced composites prodn. - by wrapping reinforcing fibre with lower-melting matrix fibre to form yarn which is then moulded with heat and/or pressure

The prodn. of a composite material (I) with a textile structure, esp. woven, knitted or braided fabric, fibre bundles or non-woven fabric made of fibres, staple fibres, threads or yarn (A) embedded in a matrix (B) with m.pt. below that of (A) comprises producing the matrix-forming material (II) in t...

Summary:The prodn. of a composite material (I) with a textile structure, esp. woven, knitted or braided fabric, fibre bundles or non-woven fabric made of fibres, staple fibres, threads or yarn (A) embedded in a matrix (B) with m.pt. below that of (A) comprises producing the matrix-forming material (II) in the form of fibres, threads or yarn which are aid, woven, knitted or braided into (A) or spun into or around yarn (A), and converting it into matrix (B) by the action of heat and/or pressure. Also claimed is a yarn (C) for producing (I), consisting of a core of one material (A) and a sheath of lower-melting matrix material (II) wound or spun around material (A). (A) and (B) both contain several components; pref., (A) consists of fibres, staple fibres, threads or yarn made of glass, aramid, carbon, ceramic, metal, polyester, PPS, polybenzimidazole and/or nylon, and (B) is polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, polyester and/or PPS. (I) contains 20-70 wt.% (A) and 30-80 wt.% (B). ADVANTAGE - The process is cheaper than prior-art processes involving melt-coating, slip-coating, or hot spraying the reinforcing fibre with the matrix material, and gives prods. of higher and more uniform quality. It is esp. suitable for the prodn. of composites by the pultrusion process. Yarn (C) has a high shear strength between matrix and core.
