Summary:Substd. benzopyranothioxanthene dioxides of formula (I) are new, where R1, R2, R3 and R4 = H, up to 12C alkyl opt. substd. by halogen, hydroxyl, cyano or lower alkoxy, 5-6C cycloalkyl or phenyl or benzyl opt. substd. by halogen, nitro, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy or R1 and R2 or R3 and R4 together with the N atom form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic gp., V1 and V2 = H, halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy, X and Y independently = C or N, Z = N, NH or a C or N atom substd. with a lower alkyl or aralkyl gp., the rings A and B are opt. substd. with a halogen, nitro, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, phenyl, phenoxy or amino gp., the amino gp. opt. mono- or di-substd. with lower alkyl, lower alkylcarbonyl, phenyl or benzyl gps., and the ring d = a condensed, 5-membered, N-contg. heterocycle. Pref. R1, R2, R3 and R4 = lower alkyl, ring B = non-substd. or mono- or di-substd. by halogens, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy gps., and ring d = a pyrrole, pyrazole or imidazole ring. USE- Useful as colour developers in pressure-sensitive or heat-sensitive recording materials which are readable in the IR-region, giving green-blue, blue or green colours.
