Summary:A device for controlling an internal combustion engine in a motor vehicle is described which comprises a sensor system with a transmitter disc (10) surrounding a shaft of the engine, opposite which is a fixed receiver (20). Around the periphery of the transmitter disc are segments (11, 12) whose number is proportional to the number of cylinders. A permanent magnet (15) is allocated to at least one of the segments (11, 12) as a marker. The signals generated by the segments (11, 12) or the permanent magnet (15) in the receiver (20) are sent to a control circuit (21) for the ignition, injection and the like of the vehicle which comprises several threshold switches, the thresholds of which are adjusted depending on the amplitude of the signal provided by the receiver (20). Matching the switching thresholds to the various amplitudes of the output signals from the receiver (20) prevents self-adjustment and hence facilitates, for instance, the highly accurate allocation of the ignition pulses in a distributor-less high voltage allocation system with a single transmitter.
