Summary:The invention relates to a process for removing carbonyl sulphide from gases, such as natural gas or coal gasification gases. The aim of the invention is to propose a process for the removal of carbonyl sulphide from gases which is simple and cheap. The object of the invention is to remove the carbonyl sulphide from gases in a single-stage process. According to the invention, the object is achieved by adding the COS-containing gas together with SO2 and a solvent mixture of N-methyl- epsilon -caprolactam and water into an absorption apparatus at room temperature and producing, coarsely crystalline sulphur, by COS hydrolysis and subsequent reaction of the hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide formed.
