Summary:In the process and apparatus for preventing evaporation loss of alloying elements in electron beam melting, a water- cooled copper trough 10 having a run-out lip 11 is disposed in a vacuum melting chamber 2 in the effective range of a first electron gun 5. A mechanical barrier 14 in the immediate vicinity of the run-out lip holds back a slag layer 16 covering the melting charge 15 and the run-out lip 11 guides the overflowing melt 15 into an ingot mould 12 disposed in the effective range of a second electron gun 6 which keeps the melt 18 in the ingot mould 12 in a molten state. The melt 18 in the ingot mould 12 is itself covered with a further slag layer 20, which, like the slag layer 16 on the melting charge 15, is composed of one or more oxides, e.g. CaO, Al2O3, MgO, TiO2, or ZrO2.
