Summary:A process for the preparation of alkyl esters of pentenoic acid by reaction of butadiene with carbon monoxide and alkanols in the presence of cobalt carbonyl complexes and tertiary, aromatic heterocyclic nitrogen bases at a temperature of 80 to 160 DEG C and under a pressure of 100 to 1000 bar, characterised in that 0.1 to 10 mol-% of water, based on butadiene employed, are additionally used.
