Summary:Cyanopyridines of the formula are prepared by reacting acrolein and an alkanal or its acetal or ketone of the formula where R1, R2 and R3 may be identical or different and are each hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or aryl and R4 is alkyl and n is 0-11, with ammonia in the presence of a zeolite as a catalyst. The reaction is preferably carried out in the gas phase.
