A method for the production of a thread on a ball journal (1) and for smoothing or hardening the surface of the ball journal (1) in the region of the ball-journal taper (29), the ball-journal neck (30) and/or the spherical head (31) by thread rolling by means of cylindrical rolling tools (6, 7) that can be pressed against the ball journal (1) and of which at least one is driven in rotation and imparts a rotary motion to the ball journal (1) during the thread-rolling process, and by roll-smoothing or -hardening by means of rolling rollers (21, 22) that can be pressed against the ball journal (1) is to be simplified and be capable of being carried out with less expenditure of time and money. For this purpose, it is envisaged that, during thread rolling, the rolling rollers (21, 22) should be pressed against the ball journal (1) rotated by the rolling tools (6, 7), the rolling rollers (21, 22) thereby likewise being set in rotation and smoothing and hardening the surface of the ball journal (1).
