Summary:Fusion proteins with beta -galactosidase or a beta -galactosidase fragment with more than 250 amino acids but significantly fewer than the complete sequence of beta -galactosidase, where interfering methionines and/or arginines and/or cysteines in the beta -galactosidase portion have been replaced by other amino acids, and with an angiogenin are insoluble and easy to isolate from bacterial cells. Angiogenin and its derivatives can therefore be obtained by coupling the structural gene for the required polypeptide in the correct reading frame, if required via an adaptor, to a gene for such a beta -galactosidase derivative via a regulatory region, expressing the insoluble fusion protein in a bacterium, isolating the protein after a cell disruption, and liberating the required angiogenin by chemical or enzymatic cleavage.
