Prodn. of an EP additive of formula (I) RI, RII,...RV = H or 1-40C open-chain or cyclic, (un)satd. hydrocarbyl or their derivs., Ar = independently-chosen mono- or polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbyl or their derivs., b = 1-5, c = 2-10, d = 1-9, x = 1-6, by reacting organic chloro-cpds. of formula (II) a = 1-5, with metallic sulphides of formula MnSx, M = alkali(ne earth) metal, n = 1 or 2, x = 1-6, is characterised in that (i) hydrocarbons of formula RI-V-Arb are chloromethylated with a soln. of (para)formaldehyde and HCl in aq. soln. and/or HCl gas, possibly with a catalyst, adjusting the ratio monochlorinated/dichlorinated cpds. to at least 7 when preparing a mixt. of EP additives, or adjusting the ratio monochlorinated/(di- and poly-chlorinated) cpds. to at least 3 when preparing EP additives for lubricating oils, hydraulic oils, lubricant greases and metalworking coolant/lubricants; (ii) the chloromethylated prod. is reacted with the metal sulphide MnSx; and opt. (iii) the prod. is purified.
