Rear construction of a vehicle with a rear engine and rear door at the side, in particular of a bus, in the case of a chassis with a low floor top edge, the motor vehicle with the rear running gear being suspended on the frame at four points, and the engine at three points, the radiator block being arranged on the other side of the rear door, and the assembly opening of the engine being formed in the space behind the rear door of the motor vehicle. To widen the rear door the rear suspension points in the space behind the rear steps are at smaller spacings than the rear wheels whereas the front suspension points are arranged at an essentially larger spacing from each other. The exhaust silencer is arranged directly under the second step of the rear steps, the length of which is approximately 20% shorter than the length of the lower step.
