Summary: | The invention relates to a process and an apparatus required for carrying out the process for decreasing nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases of any type by plasma impingement. In a known process, the exhaust gas is passed through a plasma which is built up between two or more electrode plates which are arranged at a spacing of a few millimetres, parallel to each other and mutually surface-covering. However, such an apparatus is only suitable for reducing nitrogen oxides in small amounts of exhaust gases, but not for the hot and dust-laden exhaust gas arising in large amounts from industrial furnaces. Decreasing NOx in large amounts of exhaust gas is achieved according to the invention with a plasma gas burner producing a plasma gas jet to which defined media are fed which are present in the plasma gas jet as reducing gas species such as excited H2<*> molecules, H<*> atoms or other free radicals and are brought into contact with the pollutant-containing exhaust gas at temperatures of 500 to 950 DEG C and reduce the nitrogen oxides to molecular nitrogen. |
