Summary:Thermographic print heads have a layer giving protection against abrasion which is conventionally 10 to 15 mu m thick. According to the invention, the protective layer (6) consists of a rigid material with a much longer service life than the layers hitherto conventional. As a result, the layer thickness can be reduced to a fraction of the previous thickness. The protective layers are in many cases sensitive to temperatures above 400 DEG C. With the pulsed driving of the heating elements (9) over a predetermined duration which has hitherto been conventional, unnecessarily high peak temperatures arise. The pulsed driving is thus replaced by driving with a sequence of pulses, as a result of which the peak temperatures that have arisen hitherto are avoided.
