Summary: | In winding a sheet of material, partic. paper, into a roll, a thin-walled tube is used as a core, on which several turns of the material are wound which are coated with adhesive to build up a core of sufficient thickness and strength to withstand the subsequent winding and handling operations. The adhesive application then ceases, and a roll of the required length is wound. The end of the sheet of material is again coated with adhesive for a sufficient length to form a supportive and protective outer covering for the roll. This obviates the need for a stock of tubes of different types, and for reinforcing end-caps for them. The only requirement is for a single type of inexpensive, thin-walled, low-quality tubes. The adhesive applicator can be used to apply any type of dressing or finishing agent to the material during the winding operation |
