Summary:An excess of air exceeding the combustion air required by a furnace, for example a reformer furnace is compressed by at least one compressor device and then heated by exchange of heat with hot, gaseous products of combustion from the combustion part of the furnace and a first and a second flow of heated compressed air are formed. The first flow of air, which has a higher temperature than the second flow of air, supplies the combustion air for the furnace and is expanded in a first turbine, which is coupled to the or to a first compressor. The second flow of air (that is the excess air exceeding the combustion air demand of the furnace) is superheated by the combustion of additional fuel in the flow and if necessary steam is also injected into the flow before it is expanded in a second turbine, which is coupled to a machine to be driven, for example a synthesis gas compressor and to the or to a second compressor device.
