Electroslag remelting of metals - using inert gas jets directed at immersed electrodes to promote slag flow and improve melting

Summary: | An electroslag remelting method comprises melting down at least one consumable electrode in a liq. electrically conductive slag and blowing a gas into the slag by means of a jet directed towards the electrode. The gas is blown with enough force to create a flow of slag around the slag-immersed portion of the electrode. The gas jet velocity of the nozzle outlet is pref. 0.5 m/s per mm of distance between nozzle and electrode. The flow rate in an multi-electrode system is controlled in proportion to electrode immersion depth. The method is esp. useful in multi-electrode systems, in which it eliminates unbalance in the melting-down rate of the electrodes. The melting down rate is increased, controllably, and thus provides savings in power consumption and uniform melting. |
