Summary:To recover SO2 from a raw mixt. with CO2 and water vapour etc., in a first stage the mixt. is cooled in one of a set of three cyclically operating regenerators filled with coke or graphite to condense the water, and is then compressed and fed to an adsorber and a rectifying column from whose base SO2 is taken in liq. form. In a second stage each regenerator is flushed with gas from the rectifying column to remove residual SO2 which is returned to the hot end of that regenerator then in the first raw gas treatment stage. In a third stage the rectifying column is flushed by rectifying gas, with atmospheric air added to correct the thermal balance but cut off near the end of this third stage. HF present in the mixt. is reacted with CaCl2. Used for the mixt. obtd. when S is removed from combustion fumes by adsorption in active coke and the coke is then desorbed. The sulphur is here required as SO2 and not the more usual elemental S.
