Vinyl alkyl ketone prodn. from 2-chloroethyl analogue - by dehydrohalogenation in two phase system, useful as perfume and aroma intermediates

Prodn. of vinyl ketones of formula (I) RCO-CH:CH2 (R is 2-9C, esp. 5C, alkyl) comprises dehydrohalogenation of chloro cpds. (II) RCOCH2CH2Cl at 25-35 deg.C in a 2-phase dichloromethane-water system with buffered alkaline medium in presence of a phase-transfer catalyst (III). (III) is pref. a quat. a...

Summary:Prodn. of vinyl ketones of formula (I) RCO-CH:CH2 (R is 2-9C, esp. 5C, alkyl) comprises dehydrohalogenation of chloro cpds. (II) RCOCH2CH2Cl at 25-35 deg.C in a 2-phase dichloromethane-water system with buffered alkaline medium in presence of a phase-transfer catalyst (III). (III) is pref. a quat. ammonium cpd., specifically distearyl-dimethylammonium chloride (IIIa) and the buffer pref. comprises Na acetate and NaOH soln. (I) are intermediates for perfumes and aromatising agents and 1-octen-3-one is itself an aromatising component of mushrooms and other edible fungi. The process uses easily available starting materials with yields of over 80% without corrosion problems (contrast use of Na stearate melts).
