Summary:Prodn. of 2,3-dimethylbutane-2,3-diol (I) and 3,3-dimethylbuten-2-one (II) comprises reacting a 2,3-dihalo-2,3-dimethylbutane (III) in aq. medium with aq. KOH keeping the pH >=7. Pref. reaction is at pH 9-11 and 70-100 degrees C and (III) is esp. the dibromo cpd. (IIIa). The simple process gives high yields. The KOH soln. is suitably 20-40 wt.% and the reaction mixt. must be vigorously stirred. The ratio (I):(II) is about 3:1, at pH 7 formation of (II) is favoured.
