Summary:Prodn. of alkoxyacetic acids and their salts of formula RO.CH2COOX (I) (R-1-8(1-3)C opt. branched alkyl. X=H or alkali metal) comprises reacting ROH, alkali chloroacetate (II) and base at high temp. with continuous agitation (pref. stirring). The reaction is carried out in heterogeneous phase using an anhydrous medium and the base used in a separately prepd. alkoxide (II) used at excess relative to (II). The salt prod. may be converted to (I,X=H) with mineral acid. Pref. the ratio (III) (II) is 1-1.21 (1.03-1.1:1) and the alkoxide is pref. added as a soln. in ROH. Safer and simpler than known methods which use Na metal and ether extraction to remove excess alcohol. Prod. purity is 99% with Cl content 0.1 wt.%.
