Summary:New quinoxaline di-N-oxide derivs. are of formula (I):- (where R1 and R2 are H, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy). (I) have good antibacterial activity coupled with low toxicity. They are active against Gram-positive and -negative bacteria and bacteria-like organisms, and can be used for the prophylaxis and treatment of local systemic infections in humans and animals. They can also be used as preservatives for organic and inorganic materials such as polymers, lubricants, paints, fibres, leather, paper, wood, foods, and water. (I) may be incorporated into animal feeds or drinking water, to improve their growth promoting and feed efficiency properties. Specific (I) include 2-methyl-3-hydroxymethylcarbamoyl-quinoxaline 1,4-dioxide. In an example, this is prepd. in 88% yield by reacting 2-methyl-3-carbamonyl-quinoxaline 1,4-dioxide in acetonitrile with paraformaldehyde in the presence of N-methylpyroolidine.
