Stabilising salt-contg drilling muds - by adding maleic or fumaric acids or maleic anhydride, to retain thixotropic properties

A fresh water drilling mud, contaminated with NaCl and/or KCl, contains 1.43-17.16, esp. 2.86-11.44 kg/cu. m of an ethylenedicarboxylic acid and/or anhydride to stabilise its rheological properties. The additive is esp. maleic acid and/or maleic anhydride, or fumaric acid. Used in drilling for oil,...

Summary:A fresh water drilling mud, contaminated with NaCl and/or KCl, contains 1.43-17.16, esp. 2.86-11.44 kg/cu. m of an ethylenedicarboxylic acid and/or anhydride to stabilise its rheological properties. The additive is esp. maleic acid and/or maleic anhydride, or fumaric acid. Used in drilling for oil, gas, brine and water, where the borehole is drilled through formation which contaminate the mud with NaCl and/or KCl. The additive maintains the dispersibility and thixotropic props. of the mud.
