Summary:1480565 Ethylene copolymers RUHRCHEMIE AG 3 Oct 1975 [10 Oct 1974] 40626/75 Heading C3P A quaternary copolymer consisting of (i) 70- 90 parts by weight ethylene, (ii) 0À5-15 parts by weight of a C 1 -C 8 alkyl ester of an unsaturated C 3 -C 6 monocarboxylic acid or of the vinyl ester of a saturated C 1 -C 3 monocarboxylic acid, (iii) 0À5-10 parts by weight of the amide of an unsaturated C 3 -C 6 monocarboxylic acid, and (iv) 0À1-5 parts by weight of a vinyl ether containing up to 10 carbon atoms, the sum of the parts by weight being 100 is prepared by reacting the above monomers in the necessary proportion at a pressure of 400-4000 bars and at 110-350‹ C. in the presence of a catalytic quantity of a free radical initiator, e.g. oxygen. In the specific examples copolymers are formed from: ethylene, tert-butyl acrylate, acrylamide and one of isobutyl vinyl ether, n-butyl vinyl ether and ethyl vinyl ether (1, 2, 3); ethylene, tert-amyl acrylate, acrylamide, and n-butyl vinyl ether (4); ethylene, n-butyl acrylate, acrylamide and n-butyl vinyl ether (5); and ethylene, vinyl acetate, methacrylamide and isobutyl vinyl ether. The copolymer as a dispersion or a solution may be coated on metals, ceramic materials, textiles, wood, paper, leather and plastics materials to form a film which may be used as an adhesive for lamination with polyolefins or rubber.
