Summary:Reducing the amt. of org. cpds. in the thick-lye phase of the circulating liq. by adding an excess of C ions, thereby converting the dissolved Na salts of the humic acids and their derivs. to difficulty soluble C salts which are pptd. andremoved by decanting or filtration. In this way, impurities which interfere with the Bayer process are removed The thick-lye phase (i.e. after evapn.) contains 180-280 (pref. 250) g/Na2Ok (formula used for total Na content of the lye, calculated as Na2o). An excess of milk of lime or burnt lime is added as a soln. contg. 2-3 g/l CaO, at 70-90 degrees C and the ppte. removed. Paper-pulp can be added to assist filtration. About 45% of the org. impurities can be removed by this method and the amt, of Al in the ppte. (about 1/3 of the ppte, WT.) is considered insignificant and an improvement on other processs for removing org. contaminants,.
