Summary: | The rapidly acting automatic safety lock is used for ensuring that the vehicle doors remain rigidly closed during a collision in order to prevent excessive collapse of the vehicle. After the vehicle has come to a standstill the safety locks are opened automatically. The lock can be connected to a safety switch and the vehicle battery for power. Alternatively the safety lock can be a completely independent unit. A solenoid is powered from the vehicle battery via an enclosed switch which contains liquid mercury. This switch acts as an acceleration sensor. The armature of the solenoid is connected to the locking bolt which is held in initial position by a permanent magnet. The lock is actuated when the mercury connects contactors. The locking bolt can be held also by a mechanical device. |
