Summary:1434326 Forging GLEASON WORKS 21 Feb 1974 [20 April 1973] 7944/74 Heading B3H A powder metal compact is hot forged in a die cavity by sequential application of axial force to an end face 20 to densify a hub portion 12 followed by separate application of a further axial force to a face 22 to densify the body portion 10 of the compact. The die 30, Fig. 4, has a tooth formation 56 and a splined core rod 32 to form splines on the bore 14 of the compact during the first force application. The axial forces are applied by a punch 36 composed of a pair of coaxial punch elements 38, 40. The inner punch element 38 engages the end face 20 of the compact and the outer punch element 40 is slidable on the inner punch element under spring-bias 48. The outer punch element 40 only applies axial force to the compact after full densification of the hub portion by the inner punch element. The densified compact may be a pinion for a car differential.
