Summary: | The machine may be used as a motor to drive a pump or compressor, or as a generator using hydraulic, pneumatic or thermal energy as the prime mover. Typically the piston is of permanent magnet material and moves inside a cylinder surrounded by a winding connected to electrical terminals. Alternatively the piston can be the armature, being connected to the supply by brushes, with a permanent magnet cylinder block. In a combustion engine application the ends of the cylinder can be the combustion chambers with necessary inlet and outlet valves. The cylinder and piston may also take the form of a rotary engine of the wankel type. |
