Summary: | An essentially vertical heat-transfer means in a cooling tower has associated therewith nozzles for spraying water on the exterior surfaces thereof. The nozzles are arranged at a plurality of levels and the nozzles at each level are controlled by a separate valve. Control means are provided so that the water nozzles can be brought into use in upward ascending sequence as the heat load on the system is increased, and vice versa. When the topmost part of the heat transfer means functions by air-cooling only, the air transported through the top portion of the heat transfer means clings to the interior surface of the cooling tower. Consequently, this air which is relatively dry does not tend to corrode the interior of the tower, making it possible to construct the tower of steel. |
