Summary:1470825 Separation of fatty mixtures HENKEL & CIE GmbH 5 April 1974 [7 April 1973] 15207/74 Heading C5C [Also in Division C2] Mixtures of fatty substances are separated into components of different melting points by (a) partially or completely melting the mixture so that the temperature thereof lies above the intended separation temperature, (b) adding an aqueous non-surface active electrolyte solution to the molten mixture and evaporating a part of the water of the electrolyte by vacuum and intensively mixing until partial or complete crystallization of the higher melting fractions is obtained, (c) adding a wetting agent solution to disperse the liquid and solid fatty substances, (d) separating the dispersion at the intended separation temperature by centrifuge into an oily phase containing the lower melting fractions and an aqueous phase containing the crystallized higher melting fractions in dispersed form. The examples illustrate (i) the fractionation of palm kernel fat, (ii) separation of a mixture of oleyl and stearyl alcohols, (iii) separation of stearic acid, stearin and olefin from a split tallow and (iv) separation of C 12 fatty acid from beef tallow fatty acids. The electrolyte is preferably Na, Mg or Al sulphate.
