Summary:Test material (ammoniacal soln. or metal) is brought into contact with a reagent paper contg. an aromatic or aliphatic N base and a halide (other than F-), pseudohalide or carboxylate ion, and the reaction prod. is observed under u.v. illumination; Cu is indicated by a fluorescence the colour of which depends on the reagent used and the amount of Cu present. For the detection of Cu in metal, metal atoms are brought into soln. either by means of free halogen (e.g. as KI3) incorporated in the reagent soln., or by an electrolytic method. This method claimed is simple, rapid and sensitive (down to 0.2 mu g of Cu can be detected) and requires no laboratory facilities. It is convenient for the examination of scrap metal and other metals e.g. workpieces.
