Summary:1359274 Purifying 2-mercaptobenzothiazole SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 28 Nov 1972 [29 Nov 1971] 54923/72 Heading C2C A process for the purification of impure 2- mercaptobenzothiazole comprises forming a dispersion of the impure 2-mercaptobenzothiazole in a liquid aromatic hydrocarbon, separating the dispersed particles of impure 2- mercaptobenzothiazole and contacting the separated particles with an aqueous caustic alkali to dissolve at least part of the 2-mercaptobenzothiazole component thereof, the resulting solution containing a salt which is the reaction product of the caustic alkali and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole being optionally treated with acid to convert the salt to 2-mercaptobenzothiazole.
