Summary:A woven fabric for use as a backing fabric for hand worked carpets includes float yarns inserted parallel with the warp to provide a support on which the tufts forming the carpet pile can be knotted. Pref. the float yarns are inserted into the fabric so that floats formed by one yarn alternate with floats formed by an adjacent yarn. The fabric can be dyed with a predetermined pattern in accordance with which the pile is worked and small deformations of the fabric do not affect the accuracy of the pipe pattern. The fabric can be produced cheaply.
