Summary:1391055 Swelling plastics films; laminates BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 29 March 1972 [1 April 1971] 8380/71 Headings B5B and B5N [Also in Division H1] A plastics film or tape, to be used in contact with a hydrocarbon oil is exposed to the vapour of a hydrocarbon oil until it has taken up a substantial amount of the oil i.e., an amount sufficient to produce a degree of swelling that is not negligible. Tape to be used in contact with a hydrocarbon insulating oil in an electric cable may be so treated. In a preferred method a laminated insulating tape intended for use in an electric cable and consisting of a layer of a plastics material susceptible to swelling by hydrocarbon oils sandwiched between and bonded to two fibrous layers of material not susceptible to swelling thereby, e.g. cellulosic paper is so treated by exposing the tape to the vapour of the said hydrocarbon oil insulating. Preferably the plastics material is polyethylene or polypropylene. Exposure to the vapour may take place in air at ambient or elevated temperature, but preferably in a vacuum, so that the vapour is substantially free from diluent gas.
