Summary: | A digital magnetic tape transport utilizes two vacuum storage chambers, a magnetic head and a capstan positioned along a straight-line tape-threading path between a supply reel and a takeup reel. The vacuum chambers are asymmetrically disposed with similar but differing inclinations to provide maximum chamber length as well as a sufficient wrap on the capstan to prevent slippage, while being confined within the outline of a standard mounting rack. Such an arrangement also decreases the number of tape guides while increasing tape stability, avoids frictional contact between the capstan and the oxide surface of the tape, and is particularly suited for automatic and cartridge loading. |
