Orthoamides of formula (I): (where R3 is H, an opt. substd. aliphatic or aromatic residue, alkoxy aryloxy, alkylamino or arylamino, and R4 is H or an opt. substd.aliphatic or aromatic residue, or R3 + R4 is -(CH2)x- in which x is 1-12 and which when x >2 can be substd. or fused with opt.substd.aliphatic or aromatic rings, or R4 is a gp. -COR5, R3 and R5 together having the same significance as R3 and R4 together or being a gp. -(CHR6-CHR7)- or -CR6=CR7- in which R6 and R7 are alkyl or together stand for the remaining members of a 5- to 7-membered ring which in turn can be substd. or fused with further aliphatic aromatic rings), are prepd. by reacting R3-CO-NH-R4 with a cpd. of formula (II) at -20 to +200 degrees C; (where R1 is an opt. substd. aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic residue; and R2 is not >3C alkylene which is opt. substd. by lower alkyl, Cl or CN and in which a double bond may be present, or R2 is a single or double bond of a 5- or 6-membered cycloaliphatic ring or of a fused benzene ring).
