Summary:1335423 Superconductor devices COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 11 June 1971 [18 June 1970] 27490/71 Heading H1K The gate of a high power superconductor switch is arranged in the form of a plurality of "hairpin-shaped" elements connected, in series, the distance between the legs of each of which is less than the spacing between adjacent elements. The device may comprise a plurality of parallel hairpins connected in series, which may lie in the same plane (Fig. 2a, not shown), or in parallel planes (Fig. 2b, not shown), or may be bent round a cylinder (Fig. 3, not shown). The individual hairpins may also be wound helically round a cylinder of insulating conducting or superconducting material with the plane of the hairpin parallel (Fig. 4, not shown) or perpendicular (Fig. 5, not shown) to surface of the cylinder. In a further embodiment a plurality of parallel Nb-Ti wires are secured between a pair of adhesive insulating layers or embedded by moulding in an insulating layer to form an elongate strip which is wound on to a cylinder and doubled back on itself to form a plurality of hairpin elements (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown).
