Heating is controlled in dependence on engine temperature and also optionally on engine speed, load or the temperature of the combustion chamber, cooling air or exhaust gas. Heating can be discontinued if the engine stops. The heating element may be a whisker packet i.e. an element which is compressed from fine mono-crystalline needles which are electrically conductive.
