Summary:1309279 Electrolytic image WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 19 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 54948/70 Heading G2H Metal ions are injected imagewise into a porous electrolyte-containing recording web from a metal anode, the ions are reduced to metal, and the resulting metal image is intensified by deposition of metal from an electroless plating solution by catalytic reduction. The electrolyte may be potassium nitrate. The imaging metal may be Ag, Cu, Au, Pd, or Ni and reduction may be effected using formaldehyde or light. The intensifying metal may be Cu, Ag, Ni, Pd, Au, or Co and reduction may be effected using formaldehyde at 50-80‹C. The plating solution may contain potassium sodium tartrate or a soluble salt of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (to control rate of reaction) and an acid or base (to adjust pH). The formaldehyde or plating solution may be applied before or after injection of metal ions. As shown, ions are injected from anode 15 between passage of web 11 through baths 14 and 17. Imaging metal reduction is effected using light source 114 and plating is assisted using heat from roller 18. In another form, Fig.2 (not shown), transfer rollers and directly heated plating solution are employed.
